About ToolKit Conduct

Hugo Helms

Founder - ToolKit Conduct

Hugo runs Toolkit Conduct directly - delivering every workshop in person and shaping the course around ongoing conversations with employers and tradespeople across the industry.

"I qualified as a carpenter in 2023, having started an apprenticeship in September 2021 with a firm in Surrey.

Toolkit Conduct was built entirely on what I wish someone had told me before my first day on site.

We are taught the trade, but never the conduct required to excel through your career."

The ToolKit Mission

We help apprentices get through their apprenticeship and come out the other side better for it, avoiding the mistakes many make, and build the self-belief the trade itself doesn't always teach.

Toolkit Conduct now delivers that directly to organisations, rather than leaving it to the apprentice to find it on their own.

The Birth of ToolKit Conduct

Toolkit Conduct started in February 2024, when Hugo was staying in Guildford for work and looked back on his own apprenticeship. The trade itself wasn't the hard part - nobody had prepared him for the pressure of the workplace around it. That gap became the course.

He built it from his own first day on site - the nerves, the unfamiliar machinery, tradesmen he didn't know yet watching him work - then tested it against conversations with business owners and other tradespeople, so it held up beyond just his own experience.

Hugo’s History

Three moments that shaped the workshop, from making things as a kid to building Toolkit Conduct for apprentices today.

2004+

I was born on the south coast of Hampshire in 2004. I grew up with my older sister Milly along with my parents Nathan and Lisa. I attended the local comprehensive schools and after I finished my exams I started my college course and apprenticeship in September 2021 and qualified in May 2023. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved making things. Every time there was a parcel delivered to the house I’d be using the cardboard box to make a superhero helmet, or an alien blaster. My imagination was endless. I knew from an early age I wanted a job where I could make things. I also learned the piano as a young lad and the basics have stayed with me for life.
